Brogue loves a top table, and Spain’s Basque country is brimming with them. A microcosm of culinary excellence, it boasts the likes of Mugaritz, Arzak and Akelarre (the latter accounting for three of the region’s 28 Michelin stars). If San Sebastian seems like a long way to travel to sample head chef Pedro Subijana’s eight-course tasting menus (it really isn’t), you can now shuffle from table to bed in the 22 adjoining rooms designed by Madrid architects Mecanismo. The decor here is blissfully pared back, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the view over the Bay of Biscay, and Bang & Olufsen TVs and sound systems as standard; there’s also a 9000-square-foot spa, and – if you book one of the two suites – your very plunge pool, should you feel the need for a quick dip between lunch and dinner.
