Bang & Olufsen’s more affordable B&O PLAY range laudably displays the same levels of attention to quality and design as the main brand, so it should come as little surprise that the Beoplay A1 portable speaker is a fine travel companion. The aluminium and leather design by Cecilie Manz thankfully continues the aesthetic of the A2 and the Beolit 15. At 600g, the A1 is light in the hand and can hit a peak power output of 140W (30W continuous) from an aluminium cone mid-woofer using a neodymium magnetic system and silk dome three-quarter-inch tweeter. For its size (133mm x 48mm), the A1 also offers surprisingly rich bass, going as low as 40hz without the use of passive radiators – but really comes into its own when two are stereo paired through the custom app, which also lets you adjust the EQ. The 24-hour battery life through the 2200mAh Li-Ion battery can be topped up from empty in just 2.5 hours. And with aptX Bluetooth, a 3.5mm aux port, USB-C charging and the ability to act as a conference call speaker with its built-in mic, the A1 should service your aural needs in style, wherever you decide to take it.
