This is Land Rover’s gorgeous new Range Rover Velar – and it’s possibly the best news for the car brand since the phenomenal success of the Evoque. Where for some the Evoque might have been a little lightweight for a Range Rover, the five-seat Velar will be ideal as this new model is firmly focused on urban driving but has the full Range Rover off-road muscle under the sleek body. Talking of sleek, this is the most aerodynamically efficient Land Rover ever produced, which is evidenced by the flush, deployable door handles that are powerful enough to punch through ice. Those off-road credentials we mentioned? The car has a maximum wading depth of 650mm, optional active locking rear differential, low traction launch, hill descent control and gradient release control. Coming in six powertrains ranging from a 180PS 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel to a 380PS supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol, the Velar also boasts 4G connectivity for up to eight devices, and a new Touch Pro Duo system with two HD touchscreens in the cabin. If leather if not your thing, that cabin, incidentally, can be specced with material from high-end Danish textile company Kvadrat. Additional tech includes a choice of four audio systems (Brogue would have the 1,600W Meridian Signature Sound System with 23 speakers) and new Matrix Laser-LED headlights extending the range of full beam to a gargantuan 550 metres.
